The annotated bibliography is also a report of the outcome of the research for the instructor, the project supervisor. Based on your annotated bibliography, instructors can assess whether teams have conducted their library research efficiently, and whether they are ready to draft their literature reviews, the next assignment.

Still another component of the annotated bibliography -- and one that is much-used in humanities and social sciences courses -- finds the citing of speeches (historic or contemporary), manifestoes, and formal declarations related to the subject matter under discussion. Irrespective of the material, you will again want to enumerate, place in alphabetical order by document title, provide the date of the particular item, and the source where applicable.


Not to be confused with the abstract—which merely gives a summary of the main points of a work—the annotated bibliography always and often those points. Whether an annotated bibliography concludes an article or book—or is even itself a comprehensive, book-length listing of sources—its purposes are the same:The first four elements above are usually a necessary part of the annotated bibliography. Points 5 and 6 may involve a little more analysis of the source, but you may include them in other kinds of annotations besides evaluative ones. Depending on the type of annotation you use, which this handout will address in the next section, there may be additional kinds of information that you will need to include.
